Czaplicki Art 7/8 Subtractive Printing
Here are some fine FINISHED examples of artwork produced by the Art 7/8 students. Each students creates a block (similar to a stamp.) Then each child makes a print by applying ink to the block. They print in one color. Then they carve out a little more. They will then print on top of the first print. It allows them to get these very cool, layered, prints. Lots of awesome details!

Art is Thinking
One common misconception that art class is not a "real" class. In reality art class is one of the most important classes your child takes. They have to be able to analyze, evaluate, and create. These are all higher level thinking skills. One way we check for understanding is with a "Critique Sheet." Students have to answer questions and justify their opinion using complete sentences. Here is a great sample of a child demonstrating their knowledge.

Czaplicki B3 Drawn Portraits
Look at these FABULOUS portraits! Hand drawn! Lots of value! These can be very frustrating, but VERY rewarding! Very soon each Art 7/8 Student will have 2 portraits. One hand drawn and super realistic. What a great opportunity for us to compare and constrast! We've developed two different skill sets (painting & drawing) both under the larger umbrella of drawing from observation. Great job guys!

Czaplicki & Kluender Open Studio Time
On Mondays, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday Ms. Kleunder and Czaplicki hold "Open Studio" time during Flex. This gives students an opportunity to come and finish incomplete work, catch up if they're behind, or make sure that they are going ABOVE and BEYOND to get that "A!"
It also gives them a time to get some more individual attention if they are having trouble!

Czaplicki A4 Pop Portraits
The portriats are almost done and they are looking AWESOME!
We are using colors inspired by pop artist Andy Warhol. We've got 3 more classes to wrap them up! I cannot wait to show these off in the hallways of Stonewall!

Czaplicki B3 Self Portrait in Pencil
While we are completing our large paintings- we are also working on drawing self-portraits. We are drawing from life. This involves a lot of concentration. First they must get the proportions of their face correct. Then they must draw their features to look like theirs. Then they are adding layers upon layer of value. Shading their face will make it looks 3D and realistic. We will have both the portraits completed next week. It will be neat to compare and constrast the two portraists.

Czaplicki B3 Pop Portraits in Progress
After working very hard to draw out their portraits- students are now painting their self-portraits. We talked about different color schemes: cool colors, warm colors, monochromatic color schemes, and self-generated color scheme. The students chose a color scheme and are painting their portraits. These bright colors and wonderfull drawn details- sure will make these portraits pop!

Czaplicki 7/8 Exploratory B3 Self Portraits
I'm really excited to see these portraits finish up. This has been a LONG process (believe me- your student will agree!) BUT- they are turning out AWESOME! First we gridded our portraits. Then we enlarged them and redrew it. Now we're painting them in ACRYLIC paint in awesome color schemes that THEY picked out.
In this project we also talked a little about identity. We defined Identity. Then we talked about how we might have different identities. Or how we might judge people- but not really know who they are. When we critique this we're going to ask if we feel that their self portraits show their true identity. Why or why not?
We're using the higher level thinking skills! Also, math skills! And color skills! And drawing skills! Those brains are working overtime!
