Ryan -Fired Totem Animals

Students were asked to include a 'family object' on their totem. This family object should have meaning in the family. This student included candy balanced on their animal's nose!
Very soon we will be glazing our animals! Here's what they look like prior to the glaze. They are now in their bisqueware state. They are hard and strong. But they are still porous.
Their expressions are great! Here we have a deer!
And finally a pelican :) These are going to look so amazing painted!

Art 6 Georgia O'Keefe Drawings

We have moved on to our (LAST) project of the semester.
A quick study on Georgia O'Keefe!
Here we are drawing from life- looking at skulls and flowers.
These drawings will be transformed into a an oil pastel drawing!

What a nice, quiet focused way to head into the holiday break!

The Totem is Coming

Huge thanks to Ms. Davis- our wonderful shop teacher for loaning tools and students to create our totem pole! It took a lot of elbow grease to get so many totem's cut for student use!
THANK YOU MS. DAVIS!!! :)

Getting Ready for Totem Poles

Our Art 6 students will be making a totem pole. Each student is getting a 6" section of PVC pipe to build around. This will be a ceramic project- and will eventually be installed in the courtyard and hopefully the office!
And Mrs. Ryan is getting to play with the Miter Box Saw. And everybody is happy.

Ryan Art 6 Monotype

Students are working on their trace monotypes. Monotype is a print where you ONLY get 1 print per plate. (The name literally means 1 print!) Students ink their plates
Then they gently lay their paper on top of the inked plate and trace their amazing animal drawings. Once their done you have to carefully pull the paper back.

This artwork has a great 'Ta-Da!' moment!
See what I mean: TA-DA! :)

Ryan Still Life Sketching

In 6th grade we really get students to try DIFFERENT techniques to learn to draw realistically.
Using a view finder is a great way of getting the placement on the page correct.

We will be using view finders and a still live for Art 6 sketchbook for a while.
Practice makes perfect!

Ryan Totem Animal A3

Look at these OOBER accurate drawings! WOW!
Can these kids draw or what? By using a grid system, we systematically capture the simple shapes of the animals. We can check against the photograph, so it offers an almost fool-proof system of creating accurate images.

Ryan A3 Art 6

A3 is finishing up some gridded work sheets and ALSO moving on to the next stage in the project!
\Students achieve high levels of accuracy when using the gridding technique. Look at those tiger stripes!
Students had to grid the photograph they researched and printed out. This practiced those RULER skills that some students are a little weak on.
A finished worksheet- it's the stub hub ticket tree!
Team work is a great way to make sure your paper doesn't wiggle!

Ryan Art 6 Learning to Grid to Redraw Photographs

Check out these drawing skills.
Students are practicing to get ready for their PROJECT.
After researching our TOTEM animals, we have printed off pictures of our animal.
Now we are learning how to REDRAW something accurately for a photograph.
We do this by GRIDDING our drawing AND our sheet of paper.
The grids have to match proportionatly. And there must be the SAME number of squares.
Then- whatever is square A1 of the photograph, needs to be drawn in the A1 box of the blank sheet.
If you follow that pattern for ALL 25 squares you get a REALLY impressive almost exact copy.

We're using HIGHER level thinking skills here. We have to use the LEFT side of our brain to figure out the ORDER and the RIGHT side of brain to figure out HOW to draw it.
We've got some smart kiddos!
