Ryan -Fired Totem Animals

Students were asked to include a 'family object' on their totem. This family object should have meaning in the family. This student included candy balanced on their animal's nose!
Very soon we will be glazing our animals! Here's what they look like prior to the glaze. They are now in their bisqueware state. They are hard and strong. But they are still porous.
Their expressions are great! Here we have a deer!
And finally a pelican :) These are going to look so amazing painted!

Art 6 Georgia O'Keefe Drawings

We have moved on to our (LAST) project of the semester.
A quick study on Georgia O'Keefe!
Here we are drawing from life- looking at skulls and flowers.
These drawings will be transformed into a an oil pastel drawing!

What a nice, quiet focused way to head into the holiday break!

Huge thanks to Ms. Davis- our wonderful shop teacher for loaning tools and students to create our totem pole! It took a lot of elbow grease to get so many totem's cut for student use!
THANK YOU MS. DAVIS!!! :)

Getting Ready for Totem Poles

Our Art 6 students will be making a totem pole. Each student is getting a 6" section of PVC pipe to build around. This will be a ceramic project- and will eventually be installed in the courtyard and hopefully the office!
And Mrs. Ryan is getting to play with the Miter Box Saw. And everybody is happy.

Ryan B1 Art 6

Just showing a little variety of our student's drawings from multiple classes.
Above we have a Carolina QB!

Just to review from LAST post- students are redrawing pictures we cut out of magazines. We are using a gridded method that allows students to ACCURATELY recreate the photograph.

Here you can see landscapes that students are redrawing!
Look at this bull dog!

Art 6 Ryan Totem

More animal totems....
Read these wonderful explinations of WHY this animal repsents them! Great understanding of symbols!

Ryan Art 6 Totems

Wow! Wow! Wow!
I am SUPER impresssed with these 6th graders!
Look at the amount of insight they had in choosing their Totem Animal!
You have to really read these to get the details!
What do you think your totem animal is!?

Each student did a GREAT job justifying why THIS animal should symbolize who they are!
I could read these all day....
You should too! :)

Ryan All Classes Sketchbook Check

Everyday in every class we start with a warm-up drawing called our sketchbook. Students are given a prompt. They respond by drawing a picture and writing 2 complete sentences.
Twice every 9 weeks, sketchbooks are checked. Students are given time in class to make any corrections or add details before they are turned in.
Each sketchbook is graded 5 pts for drawing and 5 pts for sentences. Each sketchbook is then worth 10 points. The teacher is looking for completion, details, background, and content. Sentences are not marked off for incorrect spelling or minor grammatical errors.
Look for these grades on your PowerSchool.

Ryan Art 6 Totem Animals

Our 6th graders have begun their first REAL project- as we have put our Semester Project Monsters up for a while.

We are in the planning stages for our 6th graders.

We learned about Native American totems. A totem is an animal used to represent a family or clan.
We took a personality quiz to identify different aspects and adjectives we could use to describe our personality. We then used THAT information to figure out which totem might represent us.

We do research to help students have "meaning making." What we mean is that we want our students to move AWAY from just making pretty stuff "just because" and move towards having a "WHY" behind our artwork.  Ask your student about their totem animal!

Ryan Art 6 Semester Project

We also knew our students at SJMS were bright- but check this out!
They're working on LIGHT boxes to trace their monster master pieces!
Look at the detail in these monsters!
Students who  have finished their drafts have moved on to their final, which we are completing in Sharpie marker.
This lovely monster is spending a day at school! Look at the detail in those lockers!

B1 Ryan Art 6 - Semester Project

The students in all art 6 classes are making creatures from their own name.

First we wrote their names on a piece of paper. Then using a MAGIC TECHNIQUE (ask your student) we created a reflection of their name (AND we're using MATH SKILLS!) We then used htis new non sensical shape and used higher level thinking skills to convert it into some sort of creature.

These drafts are looking great! Up next we will add a background and then trace on to final draft paper.

We also will be learning about the Element of Art: Value!

Art 6 B1 Sketchbook Test

We are doing a test sketchbook before it officially starts next week!
The students are quiet and focused drawing a place they would like to visit.
We have the lights turned down low and are listening to sounds of nature to help us focus.
Our sketchbooks are used as a warm up! They last 10 minutes. They need to write two sentences to describe their drawing or answer the question.

Official graded sketchbook starts Tuesday! Please make sure your student has all their supplies! :) :) :)
